ENSCO’s transverse rail profile system is a high-performance system that can measure transverse rail profile, and complete rail wear and rail cant analysis in real time at a one-foot sample rate up to the maximum speed of the car. Parameters such as rail wear and cant can be displayed alongside track geometry data in real time. The system also detects rail cant and rail wear exceptions in real time. The ENSCO rail profile system has a very high rate of successful rail type recognition, minimizing the need for rail profile post processing.
The process of locating defects at joints and switches along the rail surface is a particularly challenging problem. Presently, track inspectors must walk to the track to locate these flaws. ENSCO has developed a method to locate these flaws in an automated process that greatly reduces time in the field. The sensor can be integrated with inspection car measurement systems and can locate misaligned switches, crushed rail heads, surface flaws, and large gaps between rails by utilizing our advanced signal processing algorithms.
The surface of the rails is vital to providing a smooth ride. Typical track geometry systems do not measure the rail corrugation. To combat this issue, ENSCO’s laser-based Rail Corrugation Measurement system takes multiple measurements of the rail, creating a spatial representation of the rail surface. The host computer calculates the irregularities and reports locations where the corrugation exceeds predefined thresholds. This useful data is an excellent complement to ENSCO's track geometry measurement program and helps railroads plan their rail-grinding and repair programs.
